Solar Ovens, Apple Boxes, Water Jugs ETC.

PROVIDENT LIVING UPDATE:

Hey Sisters,
--The message below is an email that has been circulated that references the need for our 3-month supply, and specifically documents some recent timely advice given by Dr. Susan Puls, the LDS doctor who has been assigned by the Church to research bird flu pandemic information. No one really knows if the scenario described here will actually happen, but it does make you stop and think about emergency preparedness.

Hopefully we all have our 90-day supply, but if not, there is an excellent step-by-step plan to achieve this, on iwillprepare.com. In addition, you can research further by checking out providentliving.org on the Church web site. We all need to remember that "If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear." (D&C 38:30)

Constellation Ward emergency preparedness info and events:

--If you missed the March focus group on "Water Preparedness," the presentation is on iwillprepare.com, and you can order the platforms for the barrels by sending an email to Jon at iwillprepare@gmail.com. For $35, the platforms hold two barrels each, and hose bibs are included in the price. Jon's dad, Will Sherman, will install the hose bibs in your barrels when you pick up the platform. (Eric Cassinat tells me that you can hardly make them for that price.)

--Elyssa Bent is ordering the big 55 gal. water barrels (used but sanitized), so contact her if you would like to purchase them at the extremely reasonable price of $17.50 each. (phone: 503-1575; email: d_e_bent@yahoo.com)

--Also, I have attached a flyer (here is a link ) from the solar oven manufacturer that lists prices and items available, so if you didn't get a chance to look them over today during the Church meetings and would like to order them, please let me know. If you want the oven and/or other items, contact me some time this week to put in your order. (If we can find someone in the ward who has a dock, the shipping costs might even be less.) Even if you signed up for it today, please call or send an email to let me know specifically what you want, including the solar oven itself and any of the pans, cookbooks, etc.

--We are planning to make apple box ovens also, since they are fueled by charcoal, and if there is little to no sun during the day or you need to cook without electricity at night, it is a backup for the solar oven. We will have a focus group on Thurs., April 9th to make these apple box ovens, and I will need to know if you want to make one so that I can get the stuff for everyone ahead of time. I'll let you know next week how much it will cost to make it. ( The costs for the basics will not be much.) I know you'll all be glad to hear that Jon Sherman from iwillprepare.com will be coming to show us how to make them! More info to come. . .

Okay, so please let me know if you want to buy the solar oven and/or other stuff on the Sun Ovens price sheet, and if you want to make the apple box oven, please get back to me on that too.

Subject: FW: Important Pandemic Preparation
Date: Mon, 9 Mar 2009 19:37:49 -0700

About a month ago a seminar was put on by Dr. Susan Puls, who is a cardiologist appointed by the First Presidency of the Church as the head of the church's pandemic committee. She said she was not an expert on pandemics as this was not her speciality, but in the two years she's been in her position, is fast becoming one. She now works for the church on a full-time basis working on planning for the pandemic and trying to get the word out to as many church members as possible. (There were about 1400 people at the Saturday all-day seminar.)

In her capacity, she works with the governor's pandemic committee and the federal pandemic planning agency. She also said a pandemic is coming -- not 'maybe'-- but is DEFINITELY coming. She says the pandemic is expected within the next two years but she personally believes it will be 'sooner rather than later.' The various groups (CDC, WHO, etc..) do not know what the pandemic will be but first among their list of suspects is the avian bird flu. It's only one mutation away from being easily transmitted from birds to humans and from human to human.

She said the World Health Organization expects 40% of the world population to become sick. Of those who become sick, they expect 50% will die. If you do the math - there are over 6 billion people on the earth today - that puts the death rate at over 1.4 billion people - and she says these deaths will happen over only a 3 to 4 month period of time.

Dr. Puls related that when the pandemic hits the
US , mandatory quarantines of all infected and NON-INFECTED peoples will occur within the first 48 hours. People must not leave their homes, even to go to the store, etc., for 3 or 4 months!

Only emergency personnel (Dr's, nurses, firemen, police, national guardsmen, etc..) will be allowed to leave their homes. This quarantine will last during the duration of the 'pandemic cycle' which will last approximately three months.

Her main point was that everyone will need a MINIMUM of 3 months supply of food at home as the governments of the world will be overwhelmed within the first week and cannot be counted on to provide food, medical help, etc. She only briefly spoke on the 'social disruption' that will occur. . .

This isn't to scare anyone - just to provide a 'heads up' as 'to be forewarned is to be forearmed'.

The government also has a website:
> http://www.pandemicflugov/plan/tab3.html < http://www.pandemicflugov/plan/tab3.html > < http://www.pandemicflugov/plan/tab3.html >
In the Church's new pamphlets on food storage, they recommend building your supply up to a three months supply.
As you can see in the article, Dr. Puls states that everyone will need a minimum of three months supply of food at home.
